Canine Diarrhea: Simple Ways For Your Dog To Feel Better

November 23, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

According to surveys by the national Veterinary group, canine diarrhea is the third most common problem they treat in their offices. If your pup has ever had this issue, you know how much your day is changed around. Stomach problems in dogs can come from too much bacteria in their intestinal system tract, or just from you giving them too much food or snacks. The more serious cases can include bloating or even stomach cancer.

If the dog’s stomach problems are not accompanied by vomiting and a sudden lack of appetite, the problem may be mild and you can handle it yourself. We’ve got some tips you might find helpful if your dog has loose bowel movements. But if your little dog is vomiting or showing blood in his feces, you need to put him in the car and drive directly to the vet’s office.

But sometimes stomach problems and loose bowels are just side effects from diet changes, super snacking or digging through the trash in the kitchen. Other causes could be due to parasites like worms that can make harmful bacteria grow in your dog’s stomach and intestines.

If you see worms in your dog’s feces, either spaghetti looking or rice like in appearance, you can get an OTC de-wormer medicine and this might just do the trick. But some parasites like Giardia or other worms you can’t see are not so easily dealt with by pet owners. This will probably cause further stomach problems and more diarrhea. When this happens, you need to scoop up some of your dog’s stool and carry it off to the vet office for further testing.

Its possible that you can handle mild stomach problems just by withholding food from your pet for a day. This with the assumption that all else is normal with your dog’s health, with the exception of the loose stool.

After a day of no food at all for your dog, give him or her a meal made of boiled hamburger, chicken and white rice with all the fat drained off of the meat. Give your dog small portions of food 5 or 6 times a day until his bowels are normal and the stool turns firm again. Sometimes, the vet would recommend small bits of yogurt so that beneficial bacteria can grow safely in the dog’s stomach.

Tips to Help Pets Cope with Fireworks

November 23, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

Bonfire Night is a time for fun and celebration, but can also be a distressing time of year for household pets. Planning ahead will ensure that your pets are safely out of harm’s way.

Bonfire Night or also known as Guy Fawkes Night is on November 5th and is an annual celebration. It celebrates the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Guy Fawkes and a number of Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up the House of Parliament in London.

This event takes place all over the United Kingdom with both private and public celebrations. There are firework displays and bonfires, not just on the night itself but often spanning an entire week or more. There are many traditional foods that are eaten on Bonfire Night. These include bonfire toffee and parkin. You can also eat toffee apples, jacket potatoes and black peas and vinegar. This is a wonderful and fun British custom that the whole family can enjoy.

The RSPCA says about 45% of dogs in the UK will show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. You should never show anger towards your animals if they are afraid; it will only confirm to them that it is something to be afraid of.Pets can often go missing on or around Bonfire Night. This is because they can run away after being frightened by the fireworks and noise.

To prevent your dog from becoming one of the missing animals during this celebration you should keep them indoors when fireworks are going off. You will want to make sure all doors and windows are firmly shut so your dog can’t run outdoors. Remember to secure the dog flap too. To prevent your pets from becoming missing you should have them tagged or microchipped to ensure they will be returned if they are lost. You can prevent your dog from being distressed on Bonfire Night by planning ahead and making sure your pet is indoors and comfortable.

All animals can be terrified of fireworks and you can eliminate some of the stress by following some general guidelines. Also remember that small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits can also be frightened by the noise. If possible bring small animals indoors. If that is not possible then you should put them inside an outhouse or garden shed to give them more protection from the noise. You could have the TV on or play some music to muffle the noise. You can also play or pet your dog to calm them when the fireworks are going off. If you pay attention to them they will associate the noise with something nice and not scary.

Horses have to be protected from fireworks too. Often the noise from fireworks will make a horse bolt and they could become injured. You should make sure that all of your horses, donkeys and ponies are stabled during fireworks. You should close the stable door so the fireworks can’t be viewed by your equine companions.

You will want to keep your cats indoors too, and make sure all cat flaps, windows and doors are shut tight. It is a good idea to have your pet microchipped if you have not already done so. Your cat may want to just hide and take refuge somewhere she feels safe, and as long as you know whe. You can cause them more stress if you try to coax them out of hiding.

To make this night as easy as possible on your pet dogs and cats you will want to plan ahead. During the day you should make sure you give your dog plenty of exercise before putting them indoors for the evening. You should never walk your dog while fireworks are being let off. The noise of fireworks can scare them and cause them to run away. Your feline friend may need lots of attention and soothing if of a nervous disposition.

If fireworks are an annual misery for your pet dog, ask your vet for advice. There are long term solutions for desensitising pets to fireworks. You can get information about these at your vet’s office. Your vet will be able to tell you what treatments are available for your pet. They might prescribe a sedative to help your dog stay calm. If you are going to use a sedative make sure you give it to your dog before the fireworks even begin. This way the medication will have time to take effect.

The RSPCA has a leaflet that contains practical advice on how to use sound therapy. They have also teamed up with Sound Therapy 4 Pets to endorse the Sounds Scary CD Therapy. You can help your pet deal with this type of fear. There is a multitude of advice available which can help you and your pets through this difficult time.

Bonfire Night is a great celebration that everyone can look forward to each year. With a little planning and preparation not only can you protect your pets from some of the traumas and potential injuries associated with fireworks but also your pocket from unexpected vets bills with dog insurance, cat insurance and even horse insurance by Animal Friends Insurance

November 23, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

If you have a large dog that enjoys spending time outside consider purchasing a dog outdoor large bed for them to enjoy. They can take a quick nap on their large outdoor dog bed while still enjoying the fresh air.

If it is a warm sunny day a large outdoor dog bed will be particularly nice for your pup as he or she will have plenty of space to stretch out during their nap. In the colder months dogs typically sleep in smaller balls so size might not be as much of an issue.

There are a number of large outdoor dog beds to choose from. Picking one that will best accommodate your dog can be a challenge. Each dog sleeps in their own unique way and there are beds designed to accommodate just about everything.

Different Types Of Large Outdoor Dog Beds

If your dog likes to sleep with their head propped up on something look for a large outdoor dog bed that has a bolster attached to it. Some dog beds will have a bolster that wraps around all edges of the dog bed which helps them to get extra cozy. Other styles of dog beds only have a bolster that wraps half way around the dog bed. This gives your dog some options. If your dog wants to just lay out flat or elevate their head they will be able to do so with ease in this type of dog bed.

Other large outdoor dog beds were simply designed to act as big pillows. They will be big enough to allow your dog to fully stretch out. If your dog likes to curl up in a ball during their nap they can do so as well. When curled up in a ball this type of big pillow bed will snuggle in around your pup which will help to keep them not only warm but cozy.

Another type of bed is the outdoor canopy dog bed. This type of dog bed provides a luxury environment for your dog as they stretch out to take a nap in a nice shady spot created by the canopy of the bed.

Many of the largest outdoor dog beds are just simple squares or rectangles that have some type of foam core inside of the cover. These are pretty basic and generally offer no frills for your dog. The bigger dog beds get the more expensive they can be so this can be a budget friendly option as well.

Features Of An Outdoor Canopy Dog Bed

The main feature of an outdoor canopy dog bed is the canopy itself. Each version of this type of bed will have a canopy that is somehow connected to the dog bed. There are several benefits of the canopy. The first benefit is that it can act like an umpella and protect your pup from any rain. This will also protect your pup’s dog bed as well. Another added benefit of the canopy is that it provides a bit of shade for your dog. If it is a particularly warm day the shade will be welcomed by your dog. The canopy will also keep your dog cool while they are napping.

Another great feature of the outdoor canopy dog bed is that the dog bed is typically elevated off of the ground. This has many advantages that your dog will certainly enjoy. For taller dogs this means they will have an easier time getting in and out of the bed instead of lying all the way down on the ground. Elevation also means the bed will not absorb the cold air from the ground which will help keep your pup warm.

Shopping around and check out the different outdoor canopy dog beds that are available and see if you can find one that is just right for your pup. Before long he or she will be curled up under the protection of the canopy.

Do you think it’s a good idea to take your pet on holiday?

November 23, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

This is one question i had posed to people, and would like you to think about, would you take your pet on your vacation? After speaking to a lot of people about this, i did get some very clear answers. I wanted to share some of them with you, and gauge your reactions to these.

There was a clear winning response, which actually took me surprise, many people said “No”. There are those that did mention, taking the pet with them on their vacation, could actually add more stress to “their time”. There were some, that regarded looking after there pet as working. Now I thought this was interesting, why buy a pet if you are going to consider looking after it as a chore?

A large portion of people said that they don’t see the point in taking there pets on holiday. People started to weigh up the monetary values of their pets, suggesting that they are not welcome on the holiday because they are not human. There are also a lot of processes you need to put your animal through with regards to checks, for fleas and other problems.

However there were some people that were quite warm to the idea of taking your pet on holiday. Pet’s in this situation are considered as family members and not just as pet’s for comforting people. Some people get very attached to their animals, and insist that they go with them everywhere. Although some people consider the pet the member of the family, some said that “there was a place for your pet, and it’s not on holiday”.

It was amusing to see so many different ideas on this, especially when people were talking about Egypt holidays, or even Maldives holidays, this showed that people were prepared to take their dogs to places, even though they wouldn’t have much mobility, so is this correct or false? Maybe Caribbean holidays would be extra suited to the cat or dog?

Pet Sitting as a Job

November 23, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

Pet sitting for some folks is a great job, for others it would be totally incompatible. A wonderful pet sitter needs to love animals, every animals. It is not just a requirement, it ought to be a natural love. Whether it is a cat, guinea pig or one that some folks may fear. Normal pet issues for potential pet sitters are scorpions, spiders, lizards, snakes and reptiles. In a larger company, they may be able to handle this, but typically pet sitting is a small business with only two or three people, so you will need to deal with these animals as a pet sitter. Happily these animals require minimal care, but as a pet sitter you cannot avoid feeding and watering them. Often the owner may require the pet sitter to give small live animals to the pet. In my experience other animals that cause possible problems for pet sitting include rats, “I don’t like the scaly tail”, especially as the rats and owners adore the frequent fussing and handling of the animal.

The requirement for pet sitting is in general normally during the major holidays of Christmas, Thanksgiving and summer holidays. There is also a demand for pet sitting at weekends throughout the year. Due to this seasonality, pet sitting often includes dog walking which is often needed all year.

Dog walking in a first-rate pet sitting company will limit the highest number of dogs to four or less. Good businesses such as London dog walking will give you clothing and rain protection. This is of common benefit, as the free clothes are branded, dog walking is one of the best adverts for their pet sitting business. You will not however be allowed to wear these when pet sitting, as it will announce that the owners are away on holiday. Though one of the advantages of pet sitting with somebody going in and out and doing other things such as emptying the mail box, reduces the likelihood of break-ins.

Pet sitting often requires the pet sitter to do other tasks around the house. A pet sitter will often look after the garden and house plants. Pet sitters habitually look after cats, who due to their territorial origins, hardly ever like leaving their home. Cat lovers dislike the separation from their loved animals, so businesses such as London cat sitting will upload photos and a diary on their web site for the pet owners.

Good businesses such as London pet sitters and customers demand that a pet sitter be police checked as they are often visiting homes alone

So pet sitting is a wonderful job for those whom it fits, try it!

Why Do People Play Dress Up With Their Pets?

November 20, 2009 · Filed Under Pet Care · Comment

The strange thing is that many of these people are dressing the animals up for no good reason at all so it all sounds a bit pointless. This has become a fashion in some ways with the dogs. Paris Hilton has to be the most famous celebrity that does this as you rarely see her dog Tinkerbell in the same outfit twice. How far is it before it stops being nice and starts being a bit cruel?

The opinon that I have on this is that if you are going to dress a dog up then you are wasting your time because the dog could be injured in the process. The only dogs that people tend to dress up are the small ones that look more like small rats than a proper dog. Why are people always dressing their pets up?

Many people will give this a go for a competition. The problem is that many companies are actually encouraging this by having fashion shows for these dogs.

It is acceptable to dress your dog in a coat if it is cold because otherwise the animal could actually catch a cold which really could end up hurting the animal. Really these dogs should never have come into existence as they would be useless without the help of a human.

The RSPCA are also arguing that going too far with this could result in some charges against cruelty to animals. This is certainly understandable as boots for a dog could not only make it look stupid but cause its legs some serious damage. Before you know it the pet could have to have one of those vet referrals for something like animal dermatology or even animal ophthalmology.

The best advice is to sit down and think long and hard about whether or not the poor animal actually needs any of these stupid clothes. A coat can be very useful in the winter, do not go too far and start adding hats and shoes or anything like that.
