Does Your Cat Climbs Your Curtains ? What Can You Do About It ?

Anyone who keeps cats will find out sooner or later that cats just love to climb. But why do cats love to climb and more importantly what should you do if you have an indoors cat who climbs?

Of course without being able to read the mind of a cat you can’t say for sure why cats climb so much, but if you have ever seen a cat sitting on the branch of a tree smirking at a dog wildly barking below then you can certainly understand why climbing trees is a good defence mechanism for cats and why they use it to avoid predators like dogs.

And sleeping in a tree is much safer than sleeping on the ground.

And a cat is a predator just like a dog is, and a cat will fly up a tree if he can see something there that he wants, like a bird. And they hunt very well at night and are able to catch many furry small nocturnal animals which live in trees around our houses.

So there are obvious reasons why experts suggest that all pet cats be kept indoors during the night and preferably during the day as well.

So if you’re doing the right thing, if you’re keeping your cat indoors is it realistic for you to expect that he will forget all about his love of climbing? No it isn’t realistic. If he isn’t able to climb a tree he will find something else to climb, commonly your couch or your curtains. Many cat owners have come home to find their favourite curtains in a heap along with the curtain rail on the floor at the base of the window, because the cat has tried to climb the curtains.

So you have a little dilemma to solve if you have an indoors cat. If you can’t stop him from climbing what should you do about it? Fortunately there is an easy answer. Cat furniture  is available which gives your cat the perfect place to play and to climb to his heart’s content, where he can investigate nooks and crannies and interesting places, where he can sleep in the branches, and he can do as much damage as he likes and you won’t care.

Cat furniture such as this often goes by the name of cat trees, or a cat tower or gym, but it’s a piece of dedicated furniture which is designed so that cats can scratch, play and climb as much as they want, where they can do as much damage as they want, and you don’t need to care.

So if you’re the proud owner of an indoors cat then forget about your cat learning to live without climbing. Just cater to his instinct to climb by buying him a fine cat tree and he can have all the fun he wants and you can relax knowing that he won’t be ripping up your curtains.
