Birds need to eat a nutritionally sound diet in order to live a long life. Improper feeding can lead to malnutrition and disease resulting in a shorter lifespan. You should feed your bird the right foods from the beginning.
Parrots and most other birds in the same family can eat a large variety of different foods. A parrot shouldn’t eat seeds alone. Unfortunately, that is what most new owners do, and that’s not good for the birds. Seeds contain mostly fat and not enough protein and very few vitamins.
Birds can eat most table foods but it is best to stick to healthy items including items containing whole grains, pretzels, and whole wheat pastas and bread. They should avoid eating foods high in fat. Make sure that, of all fruits, you don’t feed birds avocados, since they are toxic to them.
You should feed your birds beans and legumes, and also fruits and vegetables. Just like people, some birds are more open than others to try new foods, and some of them will refuse to try anything that is not familiar. Even if your bird refuses to eat things he is not familiar with, continue offering new foods.
Do not introduce too many new foods at once, and give the bird the time to adjust to each one. Give the bird fresh foods twice a day, and leave the food there for him for about an hour. Be careful not to leave fresh food in the bird’s cage too long as it will develop bacteria which can make your bird sick.
Your bird should be fed two times per day. Keeping to that schedule will make the bird hungry and, in turn, it will make it more ready to play. Also, if the bird is hungry, it will be willing to try new foods you are trying to introduce to it. Feeding at regular times every day will also give you an idea of how much the bird eats. Should the bird not eat well, make sure you get medical attention promptly.
If your bird does not eat certain foods, try cooking them before you offer them to your bird. Do not feed seeds aside than during mealtimes, until your bird starts eating other healthy foods as well.
And, birds also need fresh water. Keep your bird’s water dish filled with fresh, clean water at all times. The bird’s water bowl is going to be pretty dirty, so make sure you clean it every day with warm soapy water. Once every other week you should clean your bird’s water dish with a solution containing bleach. Some water soluble vitamins that can be added to your bird’s water every day are also a wonderful addition.
Birds can be charming pets if you take proper care of them, and they can be long time companions. Feeding your bird a balanced, nutritious diet of seeds, fruits and vegetables will ensure you do all you can to keep your bird healthy.
